It’s that time of year when quilters start planning and stitching temperature quilts. I have made three temp quilts using three different patterns. You can read more about them here. My favorite has been the foundation paper pieced braid. The time was finally right to offer the templates here. (I finally learned how to edit EQ8 patterns in Adobe Illustrator.)
Each braid finishes at 3″ wide. The overall quilt finishes at about 36″ X 32.5″.
Download and print the PDF at 100% scale. Confirm that the 1″ square actually measures 1″. The PDF includes 2 pages of foundation paper piecing templates that come together to create one month (vertical column) of high and low temperatures. You will need to print 12 copies, one set for each month.

Please note, this is not a full pattern, but two pages of foundation paper piecing templates. It does not include instructions for how to paper piece or how to complete the quilt. Many other quilters have discussed how to choose fabrics for temp quilts.
Roughly cut out the four sections. I usually piece most of section A before connecting section B. Trim off the bottom of section B.
Align the bottom of section B with the top of section A, overlapping as accurately as possible.. (I do not trim the top off of section A.)
Tape the two section together with Scotch brand magic tape. You will be able to stitch through this tape without gumming up the needle.
Continue piecing and adding sections as needed. After an entire month is complete, I trim the edges to the outside cutting line. At this point, your braid should measure 3.5″ wide.
For piecing, I cut my fabric slightly larger than needed, 1.5″ X 4″. Be sure to trim every seam allowance as you go.
